Why is lying down on the ground dangerous during a thunderstorm?

Solution. Posted on Saturday, November 8, 2014.

We shouldn’t lie flat on the ground because our body will provide a large surface with a large potential difference to conduct electricity. Obviously, It is danger to stand up straight. You must squat low to the ground and place your head between your knees. The idea is to make you the smallest target and minimize contact with the ground.

  1. Water is a conductor. The lightening will go along the wet surface as well as into the ground and is more likely to injure or kill anything on the surface of the ground. If you are standing, your shoes are a better insulator than wet clothes. Of course, if you are standing, you become a lightening rod but you stand a better chance than being on the ground.
