The music of the icebergs.

iceberg_in_the_arctic_with_its_underside_exposedThe icebergs hiss and crackle as they drift toward the equator. Why?

Answer.

The icebergs hiss and crackle because the ice gradually melts and expands. The crackle sound is caused by breaking ice under the influence of thermal stresses that occur in the ice. The hissing sound occurs when air bubbles, trapped inside the ice, escape and burst at the surface.
